Let’s get familiar with Panda, Penguin, and hummingbird

What is Panda?

Before I start the, there is an interesting fact about panda.

What do you think it has named as Panda?
Must be some quality which matched with animal Panda, right?

I thought it too before I came to know that it has named after of the engineer, Navneet Panda.
He developed the technology that made it possible for Google to implement the algorithms.

Google has a list of algorithms, among which algorithms that affect search results in major ways are
Hummingbird, Panda, and Penguin. Panda was introduced on February 24th, 2011.

An effort to clean google search result, Panda was released.

The algorithms increase or decrease the site rank depending upon the site key factors.
It lowers the low quality or thin quality sites in order to return the high-quality sites.

One of the thing that Panda looks for is the duplicate content in multiple sites; then it determines
which site is the originator of the content and pushes the other sites down in ranking.

Another thing that Panda looks for is poorly written content. Such as content with lots of misspelling,
stuffed with keywords so badly that it does not even read correctly and lots of repetitions that makes
no sense.

Feeling boring:

Let’s just think Panda as a guy and here are the lists of things he hates just like you hate reading boring
article.

  • Panda hates very short content piece.
  • Panda hates content duplicates.
  • Panda love Bamboo(joking) quality (long useful and original pieces of content).

There is certain misconception about Panda. He is a big guy and you know you should never keep
misconception about a big guy especially he loves munching bamboo. (Think about your bone)

  • Panda affects the whole website, but it’s not true. Panda looks a site on a page by page basis
and can affect a certain part of the site down to the single page. In extreme cases, it affects the
    entire site.
  • Some people think Panda is a penalty, but this is also not true. Your sites may be pushed down
but after a week or so it will regain its original rank.

Google Penguin

Google Penguin was born on April 24th, 2012. Penguin solely deals with links. Your website should
have a relevant link. If you are posting links to your site which are not related to your own then you
may be flagged. Even posting links to sites which are red flagged can put you in danger.

Organic linking is an important factor for example if you suddenly have a boost in links, then it can
set alarm bell ringing. Link build up in time is more organic and can increase the authority of your site.

Another very important factor is anchor tag. Don’t repeat words in your anchor tag, use synonym, and
similar terms. This is very common mistakes that you should avoid.

Now:

I don’t believe in a long story, so I here are some important bulleted tips to follow to avoid penguin
penalty.

  • Avoid link farms. Link farms exist solely to increase page rank by exchanging the links between themselves and entirely unrelated website.
  • Hidden text: Hidden text are words written very small and are of the same color as webpage so that visitor will not be able to see it.
  • Heavy use of keywords that are not related to the context, also known as keyword stuffing.
  • Duplicate content: Well this is something that you should definitely avoid otherwise nothing will help you to get out of the penalty.

Google hummingbird

On September 27th, 2013 Google turned 15 and to celebrate the occasion Google launched a
new search algorithm and named it hummingbird.
Google claimed that this algorithms will provide more relevant and precise search results.
Just like Hummingbird, this algorithm will provide fast and accurate results and so it had been
named after it.

What is search algorithm?

A search algorithm is a technical term to define how google or any search engine searched for
data on an internet.
Think of the algorithm as a recipe for cupcakes and the search result as the cupcake itself.
Just like making cupcakes from selecting the right ingredients to slicing, mixing and baking to
decorate the cupcake. Similarly a search engine has a process to deliver the search result you enter.

If you type in a search query, let’s say “how to make cupcakes”. Google send this task to index server.
The index server is lot like the index page of a book. It tells which page contains information about
“how to make cupcakes”. This task is then sent to a doc server which retrieves the stored documents
related to the search task.  Snippets are then generated to describe each search results giving relevance
to each search query and are returned to the user in fraction of a second.

This entire process is what we call is a search algorithm.

Why Google keeps updating search algorithm so frequently?
And why Hummingbird was introduced?

As our life in evolving, technology is changing too. Technology is becoming more and more intelligent.
So when it comes to search engine, people want accurate results to their query.
Earlier, when humming bird was not launched. Searching any specific topic using three or four words
was difficult.

For instance, searching “vellena and cinnamon cupcake recipe” in an older version will consider only
“cupcake” and “recipe” as a search factor and will give results related to cupcakes recipe because
that was how is was programmed to search.

But now, after long tailed keyword ( Keyword with more than 3 or 4 words like “vellena and
cinnamon cupcake recipe”)
has been included as a search factor in hummingbird, it is easy to get
specific and precise result.

It gets better:

Conversational search will also include follow up question.
But it will only work with the latest google chrome.

Once you have the latest version, you will notice a microphone icon.

Now:

Search by speaking “Apple”.
The first result will appear about Apple Inc and its webpages will be indexed.

Want to know the best part?:

You can also follow up question,

Speak “who founded it”

The result will appear about Steve Jobs and its other founders.
